It’s a dreary morning in south Georgia, but it’s all sunshine and blue skies in this photo of a Union Pacific GTEL (gas turbine electric) locomotive and a 1916 Detroit Electric automobile. This photo likely dates from the early 1950s, and showcases electrically-powered transportation on both pavement and rails.

While the locomotive technology was short-lived (the last GTELs were retired at the end of 1969), electric automobiles are once again gaining traction.
