The first-generation Ford Taurus is often credited with saving the Ford Motor Company from bankruptcy in the mid-1980s. The Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sold over 330,000 sedans and wagons in 1986 alone, but Ford upped the game significantly in 1989 with the Taurus SHO. Powered by a naturally-aspirated 220-HP Yamaha 3.0L V6 mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, the Georgia-manufactured SHO added 57% more ponies to the Taurus, and helped usher in the era of high-performance sedans.
