This 1960 brochure for the Mercury Comet pits the Comet’s

This 1960 brochure for the Mercury Comet pits the Comet’s sedan, coupe, and wagon variants against AMC’s Rambler, the Studebaker Lark, the Chevrolet Corvair, and even Ford Motor Company’s own Falcon. The early 1960s represented Detroit’s first steps in the compact car market in an attempt to stave off competition from the emerging post World-War-II import market. Cars like the Comet were targeted at younger buyers, and promised a satisfying blend of fuel economy, creature comforts, and competitive pricing. Originally intended as a nameplate for the ill-fated Edsel brand, the Comet took on various personas as both a compact and intermediate vehicle across five generations between 1960 and 1977.
